SEED ED
This project followed the journey of flax from farm to garment through growing, harvesting and processing the crop before spinning and weaving its fibres into cloth. By engaging with each stage by hand, I developed a deeper understanding of the time, skill and labour embedded within textiles. The process also strengthened my appreciation of traditional textile crafts and highlighted the importance of preserving and revitalising these practices for future generations.
Although this project was largely process-led, it produced a versatile range of outcomes that reflected each stage of flax production. I combined hand-spun fibres with the plant's stalks to create woven samples, while crochet experiments explored the material's flexibility and potential beyond conventional weaving. Guided by a zero-waste approach, I also preserved elements that might otherwise have been discarded - including flax seed heads - in biodegradable resin to create a jewellery collection. Together, these outcomes celebrate the full value of the flax plant and demonstrate how traditional processes can inform thoughtful, contemporary textile design.
